"I started using the dibs vanpool as soon as I found out Tesla offered it. And I was immediately blown away with not only the ease of use with the program and the app. But also, the help and customer service enterprise provides. Using the vanpool and sharing the responsibilities of driving between other drivers makes the 114-mile round trip so much easier, and honestly, a lot of fun."

Although many employers were still operating from a remote work environment, vanpool formation remained strong across all three counties. Merced experienced a 62% increase in vanpools with most vanpools commuting to employer sites such as Tesla.

Emergency Ride Home

Registrants 12

The Emergency Ride Home (ERH) program gives commuters peace of mind so that they can use sustainable commute modes without worrying about getting stranded in an emergency. Registered commuters utilizing smart travel modes can get a ride home by taxi, Uber, Lyft or rental car paid by dibs for qualified reasons such as:

  • Personal or family emergency
  • Unexpected overtime
  • Unexpected schedule changes or vehicle breakdown
  • Bike problem, such as a flat tire, mechanical failure, vandalism, or theft

Rideshare Week

Miles Traveled

260

Although many employers shifted to a remote work environment, many Central Valley  commuters continued to travel to the work site.  And as more commuters return to the work site, dibs continued to promote Rideshare week to support transit use and ridesharing while emphasizing the need for safety precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19

Bike month serves as a way to get people walking and biking for health and wellness as well as an easy way to get people to try out short-distance travelling outside of a car. Bike Month has been a staple of the dibs program and one of our most popular with dibs users and our community. With health and wellness as important as ever, we kept that tradition going with a fun BINGO challenge for a virtual community event.

Dibs Amid a Global Pandemic

Dibs goal is to reduce single occupant vehicle (SOV) travel by promoting the use of sustainable transportation: walking, biking, taking public transit, and ridesharing. In the last few years, businesses had to adapt and while many employees worked from home, many were considered essential workers boosting demand for vanpools. The team refocused the program’s efforts to meet the needs of the commuters while also planning to mitigate the rise in SOV travel when businesses reopen their doors. This included the development of a Return-to-Work Survey, a Telework Resource Page, Employer Video, Commuter Video, Vanpool Webinar and adapted annual events and marketing campaigns.

Commuter Survey Results

In 2021, dibs surveyed registered members to determine what’s the impact of dibs; how has the program impacted travelers; and how their travel behavior has changed as a result of dibs.

Highlights

  • 157 Respondents
  • Increased carpool/vanpool usage by 22%
  • Increased transit usage by 5%
  • 61% feel dibs influenced their transportation choices
  • 50% or less were aware of dibs tools such as ERH, Vanpool Incentives, Commuter Tracker App and Transit Info/Usage

Takeaways

  • Increase email marketing to commuters and employers to increase awareness of programs
  • Enhance transit marketing messages
  • Continue and further develop partnerships with employers and member agencies to educate employees on benefits
  • Develop more interactive tools such as video and webinars for employers and commuters
  • Strengthen dibs website to include employer and commuter tools to serve as a central resource of multi-modal information
Return to Work Survey Results

To better understand how COVID-19 impacted commuters’ mindset regarding Smart Travel, dibs surveyed over people from San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Merced Counties in partnership with the National Association of Commuter Transportation and TDM peers in Central California.

Highlights

  • Over 300 responses
  • Top industries of respondents – 43% Government/Civil Services
  • Top three reasons commuters used a different mode – cleanliness, crowds, sharing spaces
  • Most uncomfortable mode for future travel – Bus & Carpool
  • 63% of commuters considered themselves essential workers
